Tire Warranties Decoded: Treadwear, Road Hazard, and What's Actually Covered

Tire warranties come in three flavors, and knowing the difference saves both disappointment and real money.

1. Workmanship and materials warranty

Every quality tire carries this: if a defect in manufacturing appears (belt separation, sidewall failure not caused by impact), the manufacturer replaces the tire — free replacement typically in the first 2/32" of wear, prorated after. This is the warranty that matters most, and it's included with everything we sell at ExtraBrake. Claims go through the manufacturer's process; we'll help you file if it ever happens.

2. Treadwear (mileage) warranty

The headline number — "70,000-mile warranty" — is a prorated promise: wear out evenly before the mileage, and you get a credit toward replacement proportional to the shortfall, not a free tire. The conditions are strict: documented rotations on schedule, even wear (alignment problems void it), and proof of mileage. Its real value is as a confidence signal — a manufacturer doesn't warrant 70,000 miles on a tire that wears out in 30,000. Compare warranty miles in our product specs as a durability proxy, and keep your rotation receipts if you may claim.

3. Road hazard coverage

Punctures, potholes and curb damage are not covered by manufacturer warranties — that's road hazard coverage, sold separately by shops and some card issuers. Worth it? On expensive low-profile tires in pothole country, maybe. On standard touring tires, the fee across four tires often approaches the cost of one repair. Check whether your credit card already includes it before paying twice.
