The premium tier

Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Continental, Pirelli. These brands spend enormously on R&D and it shows at the margins: the last few feet of wet braking, the quietest cabins, treadwear warranties that reach 70,000+ miles. Original equipment on most new cars comes from this tier. If you keep cars long, drive long distances, or simply want the best measurable safety margins, the premium price amortizes well over the tire's long life.

The strong middle

Hankook, Kumho, Toyo, Falken, Yokohama, General, Cooper, BFGoodrich, Firestone, Dunlop. This is where value per dollar peaks for most drivers. Many are OE suppliers to mainstream automakers, most are corporate siblings of premium brands sharing factories and technology a generation behind the flagship. Independent tests routinely place the best mid-tier tires within a few percent of premium performance at 60–75% of the price.

The value tier

Nexen, GT Radial, Sumitomo, Nokian's value lines and others. Modern value-tier tires from established manufacturers are competent, safe daily tires — a different universe from the no-name imports of decades past. For older cars, short commutes and tight budgets, they're a legitimate choice. Check the UTQG traction grade (hold out for A) and you'll avoid the weak ones.

How to choose across tiers

Match the tire to the car's remaining life and your miles: a leased commuter and a kept-forever family SUV justify different answers.
